Sue Varvel


Sue’s current role is Director of Nursing and Clinical Services responsible for the management and strategic development of nursing and clinical services across Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice Care. Sue qualified as a registered nurse at University College Hospital, London in 1975, then trained as a midwife and gained further experience in a range of settings including acute medicine, Intensive Care, paediatrics and theatres.

Sue joined the newly established Iain Rennie Hospice at Home (IRHH) in 1988 and has worked in many nursing roles within the organisation, reflecting the evolving nature of both the organisation and specialist palliative care. Sue became Director of Nursing in May 2000. In August 2006 Sue started a collaborative project providing clinical leadership to Grove House Day Hospice in Hertfordshire, establishing a Hospice at Home team in St Albans for Grove House and integrating clinical services prior to the organisations’ merger in 2011.

Sue was granted a sabbatical in 2007 and worked with palliative care teams in both India and Sierra Leone providing leadership, training and education. This was supported by Help the Hospices.

In 2010 Sue completed a master’s degree in Hospice Leadership at the University of Lancaster in partnership with Help the Hospices and the International End of Life Observatory.

Sue was elected as chair of the NAHH in September 2009 and as Chair presented at the Help the Hospices Conference in 2009 and 2011.
